Personal Statement:  When Stu and Bill asked me to join them to found Bountiful Churchyards, I have to admit I was a bit surprised. I'm spiritual in my own way but not particularly religious. I am also not the least bit granola. Bees are not my thing. I don't have a green thumb. I spend more time watching the field at AT&T Park being groomed during SF Giants games than I do grooming my own yard. But then they told me why they were asking me. They wanted someone strong in accounting and business informatics to oversee the business side of things. Moreover, they figured that if they could explain the rationale for what they were doing to someone who would not automatically agree that any particular action made good business sense, their ideas might actually have merit. So here I am. I am, by the way, highly committed to this cause. I do care about the poor, and the environment, and I think the approach Bountiful Churchyards is taking, providing opportunities for the poor to grow and glean their own food, preserves the dignity that one derives from work.  And I get to apply my own skills, and interests, in my own way to the problem.

The Chair of our Board of Directors, Bill Mains is the Leadership Lecturer for undergraduates in the Leavey School of Business at Santa Clara University.  He is responsible for teaching courses in the undergraduate leadership competency curriculum and designing/facilitating co-curricular leadership and sustainability programs, such as CLASP (Contemplative Leadership and Sustainability Program) and the Alaska Summer Immersion.  He earned a BA in Psychology from Carthage College, an MEd in Community Counseling from Kent State University, and an MA in Theology, Ethics and Social Theory from the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, CA.  He lives in San Jose, CA with his wife, two sons, and dog.

Why am I involved with Bountiful Churchyards?  Well, there are two main reasons.  First, my faith calls me to action in the service of justice, the pursuit of the common good, and in a life lived in hope for a transformed and unified Creation.  Providing opportunities for the poor among us to address their own needs is an exercise of justice that supports the common good.  Partnerships forged through creating edible landscapes and gardening spaces provides opportunity for unification through physical, emotional, and spiritual transformation.  Second, I grew up in a family that gardened, canned, and preserved a lot of our food.  Some of this activity was for enjoyment, but a lot of it was out of necessity.  Now with a family of my own, I continue to garden, can, and preserve so that I can pass along to my sons the gifts my parents gave me - a love for dirty hands, an appreciation for knowing where my food is sourced, a feeling of accomplishment, an opportunity to exercise independence and self-reliance, and an outlet for creativity.

In short, Bountiful Churchyards provides a vehicle for my vocation.

I am a founder, with Bill Mains and Yvette Lo, of Bountiful Churchyards.  Bountiful Churchyards was conceived during a discussion group Bill was facilitating at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church on sustainable living.  As the group was discussing one, or another, issue, I was off on a tangent in my own mind.  I was wondering how to unite the many guerrilla gardeners, creek freaks, wetland restorationists, urban foresters, backyard chicken farmers, urban beekeepers and foragers in our communities, with their skills, insights, and physical abilities, with churches, who often have underutilized space - underutilized because they don't have people with the skills, insights, or physical abilities to do the work .  On the one hand, the former group are often spiritual in their own ways, but not formally religious, while the latter are formally religious, but don't necessarily recognize the spiritual aspects of agricultural activities.  As for me, I hope my life embodies both formal religiosity and natural spirituality as I see both as important for the human journey.  I also strive to be competent and well-informed in all that I do and, as the Executive Director of Bountiful Churchyards, work with the other directors, staff and volunteers to develop programming that makes good business sense, maximizes benefit for the poor, maximally fulfills the mission and vision each congregation has for itself and its churchyard, and is fun...fun...fun... to be a part of.  Prior to starting Bountiful Churchyards with Bill, I was a K-12 teacher for 20 years, much of the time in Oakland, CA.  In addition to an MA in Curriculum and Instruction from Chapman University, I have an EdD.  in Organization and Leadership from the University of San Francisco.  Currently, I am an M.Div. student at the Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary of California Lutheran University and Vicar at University Lutheran Church, Palo Alto, CA.

Business Manager / Accountant

By day, I'm a staff accountant for the Los Gatos  - Saratoga Community Education and Recreation District. I'm proud of LGS Recreation and my work there. Its Mission is to  "Building a healthy community through enrichment, innovation and fun!".  I am passionate about my volunteer work at Bountiful Churchyards for similar reasons.  In its own way, Bountiful Churchyards promotes community health.  Bountiful Churchyards takes an innovative approach to addressing hunger issues.  As an accountant, I am mindful of the often repeated saying, "the most moral document of an organization is its budget".  This is true.  As the Christian Scriptures relate, "where a man's treasure is, there his heart is also".  My goal as accountant at Bountiful Churchyards is to keep the books 100% accurate and up-to-date at all times, and provide informative reports,  so that our team is able to make the most out of what we do have, and fulfill the high standards we have set for ourselves as a charitable organization.
